Steel rebar in Oman is the reinforcement steel that carries tension inside every concrete slab, beam, column and foundation. Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, so ribbed steel bars are cast into it to hold the structure together. Get the grade or size wrong, or buy poor-quality bars, and the whole structure carries the risk. This guide covers the grades, sizes and weights, where each size is used, how Oman’s climate affects rebar, and what to check before you order.

Steel Rebar in Oman: Grades and Standards

The grade tells you the minimum yield strength of the bar, meaning the stress at which it starts to deform permanently. Two systems dominate the market.

BS 4449 Grade B500B is the British standard for weldable reinforcing steel. The 500 is the minimum yield strength in megapascals (MPa), and the B is the ductility class. Al Yusr supplies rebar to BS 4449 Grade 460B/500B.

ASTM A615 Grade 60 is the American specification for deformed carbon-steel bars, with a minimum yield strength of about 420 MPa. Projects that follow US codes usually specify it.

Your structural engineer sets the grade, and it is written on the drawings. Never swap one grade for another to save money. A bar that does not match the specification can fail inspection and delay your pour.

Rebar Sizes and Weight Chart

Deformed steel bars are sold by diameter and priced by weight, so you need the weight per metre to estimate a tonnage. The formula is weight in kg per metre = diameter squared ÷ 162, with the diameter in millimetres. For steel rebar in Oman, Al Yusr stocks Qatar Steel and Jindal Panther bars in the ten sizes below. These are theoretical weights. Delivered weight varies slightly within the tolerance set by the standard, so the figure on your delivery ticket can differ a little.

Where Each Rebar Size Is Used

The structural drawings set the size for every element. Steel rebar in Oman is stocked from 8mm to 32mm, and as a general guide, 8mm and 10mm bars are used for stirrups, ties and light slab reinforcement. Sizes from 12mm to 16mm are common in slabs, beams and the main bars of residential and light commercial buildings. Larger bars from 18mm to 32mm go into columns, foundations, raft slabs, retaining walls and heavy industrial structures. Treat this as general guidance only, and always work from the drawings.

How Oman’s Climate Affects Rebar

Oman’s coastal cities, including Muscat, Sohar, Sur and Salalah, combine humidity with salt in the air. Once chloride and moisture reach the steel inside concrete, the bar rusts, swells and cracks the cover, which makes rust the main long-term risk to steel rebar in Oman’s coastal areas. Keep the specified concrete cover over every bar, store rebar off the ground on timber or blocks, and use a dense concrete mix that is cured properly. Light surface rust is normal, but flaking rust that reduces the bar section is not. For foundations and structures near the sea or in contact with groundwater, ask your consultant whether epoxy-coated bars are needed.

What to Check Before Buying Steel Rebar in Oman

A low price means little if the bars do not meet the specification. Before you place an order, check these points with your supplier:

• Ask for the mill test certificate for every batch. It shows the grade, the yield and tensile results and the standard the bars were tested to.
• Confirm the brand, grade and diameter match your order, and look for the rolled ribs and mill marking on the bar.
• Check that the sizes are in stock and how soon they can reach your site in Muscat, Sohar, Salalah or another governorate.
• Ask whether the supplier can cut and bend bars from a bar bending schedule, which saves labour and waste on site.
• Get a written quotation that states the brand, grade, sizes, quantity, delivery terms and how long the price is valid.
